Building community with small goups

Community can be hard to find in today’s busy world. For more than two millennia, churches like ours have offered community to ward off loneliness and reduce isolation. You can become part of this community here by joining in one of our these small groups. Feel free to email the group leader or attend the group for a “test drive” the next time they meet.

Abraham's Garden

If you like to garden – or to help fight hunger – please join our gardening crew as we tend Abraham’s Garden. Each summer we grow tomatoes, lettuce, and other crops for distribution by WHEAT. For almost 50 years WHEAT, Inc. has been providing food, personal care items, advocacy, and support to those in our community suffering from food insecurity. Based on the belief that access to good quality nutritious food is a basic human right and social justice issue, WHEAT was founded in 1975 by the West Haven Clergy Association as a central place where West Haven residents in crisis can obtain food. Please eamail Sue for more information.

Book Club

Our Book Club is a small group that reads and discusses books to build deeper relationships with one another and with Christ. In the past we’ve read Inspired by Rachel Held Evans and Being Christian by Rowan Williams. Everyone is invited and welcomed to be a part of this ministry. We just wrapped up our most recent book, Love is thy Way by our Presiding Bishop, Michael Curry. Please email Sarah for more information

Bible Study

Twice a month we gather to study the Bible, share stories, and get to know each other a little better. Bible Study runs from fall to spring on Sundays when Fr. Tom is celebrating the Eucharist.  Our sessions start after people have time to stop by Coffee Hour and then continue for 30 to 45 minutes. Please contact Fr. Tom at church (203.934.3437) if you have any questions.

Sunday Community Time

What would Sunday service be without refreshments following?  This is a time for fellowship, touching base, and making new friends. Coffee hour occurs after each Sunday service.  Our Coffee Hour is provided by a different team of two or three people each week.  Please email Kati for more information.

Cooking Breeakfast @ Columbus House

We could use your help making breakfast for people at Columbus House once Saturday a month. Columbus House serves people experiencing homelessness or at imminent risk by providing life-saving outreach, shelter, and housing and by fostering their personal growth and independence. They also advocate for and create affordable housing to end homelessness in our communities. Please email Kati for more information.

Retirees Brigade

These parish members join together during the week to complete special projects around the building.  They usually gather on a weekday hence the preponderance of retirees. In recent months they have painted, reorganized stuff, and helped bring order out of chaos. The work is not strenuous – the real joy comes from the sharing of time together. Please contact Nancy for more information.

Women’s Retreat

This annual fall event was begun by the women of St. John’s by the Sea and continues to grow.  It is a weekend designed to heal the heart, mind and spirit of the attendees and features fellowship, good food, hikes/nature walks, visits to farm animals, snacks, zigsaw puzzles, games and laughter all in the rustic setting of the Incarnation Center in Ivoryton, CT. Please email Kati for more information.
